What It Is

  • Subject: What It Is

I don't know if any of you remember my story a few
weeks back about my brother phoning Gerard in 1990 but
I was speaking to my brother recently and he told me
something about that conversation that I wasn't aware
of. He was asking Gerard about Michael Stipe's vocals
on What It Is and Gerard said the idea was it
represented a vocal version of a string quartet. So
basically each vocal track Stipe sung represented each
instrument of a quartet. Maybe some of you knew that
already but I thought it was quite interesting and
thought I would mention it!
