Re: Christmas Shows

Two great shows which were every bit as good as the two Scottish shows last
year. Whilst the Thursday had the element of surprise and Bec
crowd-surfing,
I felt on balance the Friday was slightly better in terms of sound and
audience reaction. Certainly all three guitars were clear on the Friday
whereas on Thursday I thought Bec wasn't quite as loud as Mike and Rodney.

Friday was ferociously loud though - my ears were ringing despite wearing
earplugs.

The setlists were near identical with only a couple of changes in the
batting order on the Friday. The band's retweeted my photo of Thursday's
setlist on twitter - both shows are on setlist.fm.

Looking forward to seeing more videos from the shows - BIMH from Friday is
already up and it's worth watching for Gerard trying (and failing!) to
encourage Bec to dive into the crowd again and then his reaction shortly
afterwards when he saw where Chris had ended up during the closing stages
of
the song!

Sadly ill health seems to be an occupational hazard of veteran bands, but
Gerard seemed quite positive ("I was ill, but I'm not now.")

Really hoping we'll get a decent tour in support of the new record in the
New Year - Gerard specifically mentioned Spring on Thursday but not the
Friday.

The supports were a generally sportive mixed bag but particularly enjoyed
Karen on Friday. E.P. ordered.

Will get some sort of review on the blog over the next couple of days.

Great gig I?d say. Very loud. My ears are still ringing away here on Sunday
lunchtime. Maybe it?s just my age...

For the record, I?m a veteran of the bands gigs since the mid-80?s, and I
rate this lineup (inc G.Starkie obviously - dunno if Rodney is going to
feature going forwards?) as one of the very best - Bec and Mike are both
great, punchy guitarists - for me, their work on ?And stones? on Friday
night (and during the last tour) was phenomenal.

What I like best about the current band was nicely highlighted on Friday -
there?s a great set of ?Russian dolls? nested within the overall membership
(?fractals? is how Robert Fripp memorably describes it) - so you can have a
Bec rocker of a song, a Rodney-sung melodic classic (nicely augmented by
Chris on Friday) and Mike also fronting up well too - but each time they
all
still classic Blue Aeroplanes!

Also it?s great how so many of the ?Welcome, Stranger!? songs have so
quickly become bona fine live classics.

Now let?s have that album out and then a 2019 tour! The band is as vibrant
and essential as it ever was!

Good gig. Loud.

Gerard apologised for the lack of an album yet - he said he?d been ill,
laid
low for some time, and that had delayed things.

They played a good set, with old favourites and some new ones. I was really
pleased to Rodney back in the fold. His guitar playing really adds
something. He did ?Different now? and he and Chris (and, later, the rest of
the band) did a killer version of ?Disney Head? (OK - they?re Aero songs
but?). Becs was on good form, very impressed by ?And stones?.

It?s worth taking a look a Twitter - good photos and comments.

Very disappointingly, I?m too ill to come tonight so there are two
e-tickets
for sale (for less than face value) here:

I understand that it?s sold out so I hope this helps one of you, or someone
you know. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great night.
